Austrian writer, feminist, and filmmaker Carola Mair’s work centers on human rights, gender equality, and social justice. A global documentary filmmaker since 2000, she has dedicated her practice to amplifying the voices of women and children, often bringing to light stories that remain unseen or unheard.
Her filmmaking approach is deeply collaborative, treating each project as a shared journey of discovery shaped by emotional truth and unexpected revelation. She views film as a powerful medium for making the invisible visible—expanding perception, fostering empathy, and creating space for dialogue across cultures and communities. For Mair, filmmaking is akin to composing a visual poem, where image, silence, and narrative intertwine to evoke deeper understanding.
Her latest documentary, PRECIOUS_LIEBEnsWERT (2022), offers an intimate and unflinching portrait of three women navigating sex work shaped by poverty, addiction, and human trafficking. The film probes the intersections of power, systemic inequality, and the lived realities of marginalized women, challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths.
Her extensive filmography spans continents and themes—from domestic violence and artistic expression to migration, cultural identity, and postcolonial realities. Notable works include LOVE:LIFE (2020), Flow – The Creative Principle (2016), and Tibet’s Children in Exile (2013), among many others.
Across her body of work, Mair remains committed to storytelling that is courageous, humane, and transformative—work that not only documents the world, but seeks to change it.
